Which is why I’m writing one… This album is SO good! But so underrated… It has an Off the Wall/Madonna’s debut kind of vibe (which is right up my alley). The singles (the uber catchy Say You Do, the funky Young Love, and the pop/rock banger Come Give Your Love To Me) are the best songs on here, but the other songs are very good too.. Most of the songs on this album may not have the most complex lyrics, but Janet’s personality and sugary sweet voice give them some depth and make them worth listening to. I recommend this album to any 80s pop music fan or Janet fan. You won’t regret getting it!

"Come Give Your Love To Me" was the best song on this album. I recall it receiving a lot of airplay when it came out. The sound was new for the time, and we LOVED this song!!! Glad to find it once again.
  • Not Janet’s typical sound, but still solid

Although Janet herself was never enthused about recording this album, her self titled debut is a really solid effort. Her voice sounds better here than it ever does in later recordings; very sweet and clear. The music is kind of in between disco and R&B, which hits my sweet spot. Obviously, her later albums have overshadowed her debut, but the songs are still catchy and well produced. The album opens strong with “Say You Do”, “You’ll Never Find” and “Young Love” - all of which are upbeat disco tracks that are great to dance to. “Love and My Best Friend”, while a little corny, is still a nice conclusion to side 1. Side 2 of the album, starting with “Don’t Mess Up This Good Thing”, is a little more 80s and a little less disco. “Forever Yours” is an underwhelming ballad, but “The Magic is Working” steals the show - it’s groovy in all the right ways. The one song I just really don’t care for is “Come Give Your Love to Me”. Maybe the song was just a product of its time, but it’s a synthesizer-heavy, over produced dud. I can kind of picture middle schoolers in 1982 finding some appeal in the track, but for my modern ears it’s just too much. Overall, Janet Jackson is a great album.
