Listening to these timeless pieces evoke multi-layered memories. The philosophy grounding these numbers and the excellent musical arrangement transports one to yonder frontiers - you may chose to dance, tap your feet or just close your eyes to be washed by wave after wave of excitement. This Kalabari, Nigeria born son of Africa is truly a master of the highlife genre.
Please correct the title of track 18 to "Osuala Oru Enene".

This is a release of 1960s West African dance band music known as highlife. Rex Lawson(1930-69), bandleader and trumpeter was a Nigerian master of the form, that owed much to traditional African rhythms and percussion as well as jazz. Rex Lawson, originally from Calabar was a polyglot who sang in many major Nigerian languages. Most of the hits here are happy dance pieces with masterful dashes of brass. For those who lived in West Africa at the time these were popular, they are evocative of the Nigerian Civil war. The first piece here, "Jolly Papa" sounds like a beautiful dirge in the language of music. Enjoy this time capsule.
