So nice to hear this album again ...

I discovered this album right after its release, in1968. I was in grade school at time time and I played this album on my little plastic turntable til the grooves ran thin. Pretty sophisticated for a 9 year-old! (But my other favorite album at the time was "Walt Disney's Happiest Songs" - so there was some disparity in my taste....) Upshot: It's absolutely wonderful to hear this album again. Thank you, iTunes! Taste, elegance, sophistication are the descriptions that come to my mind when I relish in this album. What I love most is this: the producer acknowledged and paid tribute to the intelligence of the audience; nothing here is dumbed down. This is Judy Collins at her most pure. Enjoy!

....spent many a night listenin' to this one......"Dress Rehersal Rag", it was a long way down.....for sure.....and then the dreamy "Sunny Goodge Street"....then, Liverpool Lullaby, aye, that's a sad one....every song on this album was great and that's a hard one to find, that is , in those days one bought the whole album for just a couple of songs and the rest was filler material and it was rare that every song on one album would shine....and this one does. Thank you.

This was one of my faves from Dad's vinyl collection, though it took me a while to appreciate it. I was always a fan of Judy's very early, more hardcore folkie material (see "Maid of Constant Sorrow" for a fine example of this era in her career), and so the "artier" and more studio-driven production values of this album initially turned me off. But I returned to this album after hearing a local DJ play her cover of "Sunny Goodge Street" and grew to marvel at the power of her interpretation. That song plus two others, in my opinion, make this album a classic: her "Suzanne" is the quintessential version for me, and "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" is equally resonant in its solemnity.
For the record, Donovan's original of "Sunny Goodge Street" is completely different from her version and beautiful in its own way. I must differ from the above reviewer and say that I think the majority of his catalogue is nothing to "gulp" about, and that while Judy created a miraculous reinterpretation of the song, she had a gem to work with. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
