Unborn Child

I bought this album in 1974 as a follow-up to Diamond Girl. Unfortunately, in 1973 the Supreme Court decision on abortion clearly divided the country and this album got swept up in that debate. Both the music and lyrics on this album are superb! Anyone with a heart had to be touched by the artists love for humankind. Seals and Crofts clearly understood the heartbreak that a Mother faces. But, they expressed the humanity and respect for life that must be considered. After 40 years, this remains a groundbreaking work!

This is a great album, distinguished by its title track, which drew the ire of certain pro-abortion groups who caused Warner Brothers to stop producing it. Classic S & C harmonies, story songs and arrangements mark this as a fine achievement. WB stopped distibuting it after a few years because "Unborn Child", a lpea for sparing a baby from abortion was deemed too moralistic by some. Madonna's trashy "Sex" book was distributed by WB, apparently money trumped "immorality". Anyway, as to the record's merits, Windflowers is a breezy S & C song, King Of Nothing was a popular single, and Unborn Child was also released as a single. Unborn Child's beautiful harmonies, soaring guitar solos and lovely tune were submerged by the pro-life/pro-abortion controversy. To listen to the album and appreciate its luxurious songs is to appreciate what great singers/song writers they were. Definitely a classic worth a listen.

I love this album as a teenager my sister Hadith but I played it more loved the whole album!

The King Of Nothing was the only song from this album that was played on the radio back in the day. I've always been a Seals and Crofts fan and consider this album to be some of their best work.

Not as popular as some of their earlier work but it holds its own musically. Windflowers has lush harmonies over a spoken word-type set of lyrics. Desert People for me is such a good feel good song, I love the line "...cause even the desert will bloom." Unborn child is what it is and very creative. The Story of Her Love has great lyrics and good music to support it. Rachel is a nice little song that tells a sweet little story. King of Nothing is so relevant even today for that guy who admires from afar (good trombone parts in the song). 29 Years from Texas is autobiographical and very much reminiscent of prior S&C songs with a sense of the new musical style of the 70's. Ledges is jazzy, very well produced and moving away from the vintage S&C sound early on. Big Mac is jazzy and catchy in its bridge leading into the chorus. A great record that is somewhat overlooked.
