Not Their Best, But...

the album is so much fun that that hardly matters. "Food Fight" is a gloriously ridiculous story of -- what else? -- a food fight, sung with Weird Al's humor and with the energy of "Ballroom Blitz." "Diet" recalls the group's earlier "Macho" material, and the gentle ballad "5 o'Clock in the Morning" finds the group seriously toying with artistic credibility. Not every song here succeeds -- and, for that matter, none of the songs pack the adrenaline of "San Francisco" or the earworminess of "Y.M.C.A." -- but "Renaissance" is still an essential listen for any VP fan.
