  • Both Acoustic and Electric are Amazing

Do not listen to all the gripes about the new sound. This album and the album following are Sam’s best work to date. I love the acoustic work — and I say this as someone who does not normally prefer electronic music. Amazing, soothing and even moving work. Listen to “Godless Brother In Love” and tell me that is not essentially the same as the acoustic work but more soothing, flowing and flawless.

The Woman King EP was a sign that things were changing for Sam. He was moving onto more clear, fast-paced, in-depth songs. The Shepherd's Dog was an astounding album tinged with electronic and rock influences too, and this album is dramatically (and still beautifully) different. Sam really is walking far from home, and he's finding truly beautiful and interesting things along the way.

Every time I listen to this album, it makes me dance or move with swagger. I love it. On the city streets, it makes me dance a little while I walk like a personal theme song from Ally McBeal. As other positive reviewers have shared, artists grow and I feel sorry for those who cannot accept this album as the wonderful one it is. When the songs were revealed live, they were a breath of fresh air and became even more impressive. It's an incredibly orchestrated jamming record and should be given more than a chance, but a home in your music player.

I'm so sick of everyone hating on this album. The old stuff was amazing, the new stuff is even better. Such complexity and progression in the song writing, I find it difficult to comprehend people's complaints about this album. Iron and Wine, keep it up!!!

I really do, because compared to the first album, it seems that KEOC is forcing the wind to blow a different direction... a WAY different direction. Here's my take on it. Of course you can't make the same folk jam songs with every album you make, they have to change over time, but really, it shouldn't mean that you have to bring like 4 or 5 more guys in and start playing all these instruments, like what you will notice at the last song Your Fake Name Is Good Enough For Me, in my opinion, that's not a good approach. A friend of mine who was teaching me guitar lessons told me about how he went to see Iron and Wine (he might have been talking about that last song) and all these guys just come in and started playing and he said they sounded awful. And I can definitely see why he thought they sounded awful. This is a great album though, but what I think is that if you keep up making another album with more instruments and an even louder sound, you're going to lose a lot of fans. Different but still subtle is what I would suggest. I DO like how he put a little jazz into this album.

Well the album cover looks pretty cool...This album is really different from his other work you defiently cant go into this album with the same mindset as his older albums, this album kind of reminds me of Marvin Gayes later work. The music can be good if you like this sort of sound but for straight Iron & Wine fans this is really different.

If it wasn't for her awful books, I wouldn't know this great music. You see folks, unlike most of you, I discovered this album first. It realy blew me away. The layers of music are so eclectic and dense, you'd think they would collapse under their own weight. But a true artist has designed this. It is flawless. Then I progressed back in time thru his other albums, and it is like peeling an onion. The naked core is on the creek drank the cradle, one man and a guitar. It is beautiful, all of it. I feel bad for the people who, having fallen in love with the early work, cannot appreciate how though this album may be different, the man with the guitar is still here, and he still makes crazy-good music.
  • I can relate...

As a painter, I completely relate to the need for experimentation. Artist must have it to grow, and not all of their audience are always going to appreciate it. Why not listen to this work for it's own merit, and not compare it to his other works? I applaud this effort, even if it isn't my favorite.

Iron and wine was the first actual good music i listened to. i was in middle school. so i have nice memories of iron and wine. But good lord this album was just horrible for me. i literally listened to this in about one minute. i would click a song and then laugh go to the next and then laugh some more. i just couldnt believe it. and when i got to big burned hand i almost cried i was laughing so hard. i swear i though i was listening to the opening theme song for the cosby show or something. god i hated this album so much. i rant about it all the time actually. haha. tree by the river was slightly bearable but i fond my self skipping it everytime i come to it when the pods on shuffle. good lord. so bad.
