I can’t help but think of two songs when I hear “Shallow.” It sounds like Carly Simon’s “Haven’t got time for the pain,” and Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” I don’t know why, it just sounds a bit banal and empty in the beginning with only a slow guitar and simple tempo and it ends with the climatic ending that reminds me of these two songs. The fact that Gaga won an Oscar is not without a little help from these and other songwriters. It would be nice if there’s one person who writes their own songs and lyrics and gets rewarded for it without “industry professionals.” When I think of an Oscar worthy musician that did just that, I think of the late Prince (he won an Oscar for Purple Rain) who used to play like 20 instruments or something like that. A lot of hype came along with this soundtrack because there’s just not that much creativity anymore. The millennials or I should say the “selfie generation” took over the music industry with their basic piano chords with no artful modulations whatsoever. Songwriting really is a craft and now it is becoming a lost art. Unfortunately, senses are just dulled because of that. I also believe that Gaga’s music and acting is unabashedly self-indulgent. I get that people like her but let’s face it, she was always wanting to become an actress even in her “salad days.” who came from a well-to-do background and grew up on the Upper West Side in NYC. I like Bradley Cooper who should have won for something by now but then again this film is a remake of a remake of a remake of a remake from a 1937 version which was actually a drama. I’m not knocking this film or anyone. I’m just calling out for the overhype and lack of deep musical skill behind this soundtrack. I won’t give this one star, but I would like to enlighten anyone that reads this that other soundtracks that have won Oscars in the past not because of popularity and hype but because the soundtrack was original and well made.
