    Amazing
  • She’s not Ella or Billie but hey, they aren’t Linda either.

Linda Ronstadt, is perhaps the most underrated female vocalist in my generation. One of those performers that you sing at the top of your lungs when you’re in your car and she comes on the radio, but when you’re asked at a party, “who is your favorite female singer?” You don’t even mention her. Ms. Ronstadt has done it all and very well I might add. And on top of all that she brought a sexiness that you thought that she wasn’t untouchable, but in those short jean shorts and tube top, she could be your girlfriend. I bought these “albums” when they came out in the 80s and having a performance degree in music specializing in jazz, I was very impressed. Time hasn’t changed my opinion at all.

I had all three of these albums on vinyl and used to sing along while I cleaned house and my babies napped. I'm thrilled to have them again to listen to, but since I no longer clean my own house and now have grandchildren I'll be listening and singing along whenever the mood strikes me!
  • Rondstadt, Riddle, and great standards combine for a beautiful musical experience

This is one of 3 albums of classic standards pop artist Linda Rondstadt recorded in the 80's, backed by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. The combination produced an amazing collection of music. Rondstadt's voice is perfect in capturing the emotion of each of these classic tunes, and Riddle's arrangements provide a soulful background that enhances the overall sound and mood of each of these pieces. I especially enjoy the Gershwin songs, particularly "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "But Not for Me". These songs perfectly depict the melancholy feel the composer intended. I also really love Rondstadt and Riddle's take on Thelonius Monk's haunting " 'Round Midnight". This is a beautiful song with a highly complex melodic and harmonic structure that is wonderfully rendered here. I highly recommend this album to anyone who loves the terrific standards that define the golden era of popular music.
  • One of my all-time favorites.

When my daughter was little we used to dance to this album, leading to some wonderful memories for me, and a very wide taste in her musical preferences. As said in previous comments, these might not be the very best or most definitive versions of the songs, but, overall, this is a wonderful collection. Ronstadt obviously loves the music. That, and Riddle's unquestionable mastery of the songs, combine to create some great versions of songs we've heard many times over. She brings emotion to songs I'd ignored as elevator and dentist office music, and made me pay attention to the beauty and poetry of the words. This isn't Ronstadt doing rock, country, Broadway or her "Canciones de mi Padre", all of which I enjoy in their own way. Put the album on in the evening, turn the lights down low and listen and see if you don't get carried away by someone who knows how to step up to a microphone and caress the words. If she'd been singing them to me I'd have been a puddle on the floor at her feet.
  • The American Standards At Their Finest

I received this boxed set as a Christmas gift years ago and still have it. I'm referring to the vinyl version of this set, the three standards albums repackaged for this set retained their individual labels and album titles. Nelson's arrangements were top-notch from the onset, listening to Linda sing these standards is like listening to an artist grow, she wasn't really comfortable at first, "What's New," the first of the three albums, finds Linda a bit "stiff" and if a video of Linda performing live with orchestra she keeps time with her foot, like a rock singer. Her second platter was a bit more swing and her singing greatly improved, her third platter contains her finest singing, "'Round Midnight" should be considered the definitive reading of this song. "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now" and "Mr. Sandman" are two songs recorded for theses sessions and have not been released, hopefully a remaster of this set, this set is analog transfer on digital medium, not remastered unfortunately, will yield the unreleased songs. You may have to turn the volume up a bit but that does not deter from this collection.
  • Impeccable interpretations

Linda Ronstadt is an amzing chameleon and she has done a masterful job of interpreting these classic songs. She continues in a long line of songstress ingenues from Billie Holiday to Sarah Vaughn to Nina Simone and of course, to Ella Fitgerald. She was also fortunate to team with Nelson Riddle, who did the best arrangements for Sinatra in the 1950's for the Capitol albums, so this is a great collaboration. Also it is fitting that this was Riddle's last album collaboration before he passed away. Puts the recent crossover albums by Rod Stewart or even Andrea Bocelli to shame. You'll love this music in any setting.
  • Timeless Songs Well Executed

If you like torch songs, this collaboration is a must for your collection. Linda Ronstadt's vocals are sweet and clear. She invests my favorite Irving Berlin song, "What'll I Do," with just the right touch of yearning and bittersweetness. Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra execute the music flawlessly.

Years ago, I begged this collection of Ronstadt's renditions of the Nelson Riddle songs from my parents. These songs taught me all the lyrics to some our most cherished classics. I am delighted to find them again! Now, as a music teacher, I will be able to share them with my students, without the "graphite squeallies" of my old cassette tapes!
