A Night to Remember

I owned this cassette tape and lovvvved it. I used to sit and listen to "Night to remember" with the rest of this great album. One of my favorites of hers by far.

Although this album may be one of Cyndi Lauper's lesser known other than the single "I Drove All Night", it is my favorite and definitely underrated. This is one of those few albums where I can listen to the entire album from beginning to end and enjoy every song. Great ballads, great 80s tunes, and great vocals. You will not be disappointed!

Cyndi Lauper had one of the strongest debut album in the 80's followed by a timid sophomore album. In the third offering, I don't know if she tried to stay current or she wanted just to be artistic, but she failed regardless. Nevertheless, this album includes the best rendition of "I Drove All Night" (Sorry Mr. Orbison and I don't think so Celine), Cyndi's put her heart and soul to belt out the notes of this amazing song. Unfortunately, the rest of the album failed to capture any artistic highlights. The album dwells on keeping Cyndi's voice caged in Adult Contemporary arrangements ("Heading West" & "Unconditional Love") or on attempts to recapture Lauper early 80's crazy persona with silly lyrics ("Like a Cat" & " Primitive"), the lead single was followed by "My First Night Without You" which stalled at the bottom of the Hot 100, the song is not bad but was not a single material. It's nice to hear her gifted voice at the climax of the song. Epic Records missed a more adequate single release but my personal choice would've been "A Night to Remember", the title track has more heart into it and the lyrics flow easily than the other tracks. I wouldn't suggest to skip this album from Lauper because it's always a pleasure to hear her voice, but Cyndi could shine with better written songs or less artificial arrangements into her material.

The only reason she calls it "A Night To Forget" is because all the songs were about David Wolff (I am pretty sure) and it was a flop. This is one of my favorite albums by her! I love all the songs on the album and I know all of them by heart. This album was so underrated. Any Cyndi Fan Should not miss out on this album!

I Drove All Night, Heading West, A Night To Remember, Unconditional Love, and I Don't Want To Be Your Friend are so well done, it's a shame that the top 10 hit to start my list was followed up by the best of the remaining 5 songs (My First Night Without You) on the album, as I feel Unconditional Love would have probably kept Cyndi in the Top 40 if released next, and probably hit the Top 20 and fueled double the album sales, but alas, the album stalled because of a bad choice and lack of advertising, and video support for her album from the label. The best 5 songs (and the short and haunting Kindred Spirit) are so enjoyable, so don't avoid this album despite the bland Like a Cat, Primitive, etc, because you will fall in love with those top 5, and possibly, depending on your tastes some of the lesser tunes. I see why she took time off after this one, she needed to regroup for Hat Full of Stars, and even though it was extremely serious lyrically and a bit dark, it was very well crafted and sung/played. Cyndi will forever be known for the first two albums that produced mega-hits, Time After Time, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, She Bop, All Through The Night, True Colors, Change of Heart (plus her other 2 hits, The Goonies R Good Enough and I Drove All Night) but she remains a potent force today with an amazing 2008 dance club album with two #1's (Into The Nightlife, and, Same Ol Story), and a 2010 Blues album that spent many weeks at #1. Also, who can forget her amazing crescendo vocals on We Are The World? Cyndi Lauper belongs in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as a musician for being recognized for Grammy nominations in 3 different genres, and being a legend for nearly 3 decades that has sprung back to life in pop culture over the past couple years. Love ya, Cyn!

So called by Cyndi herself "A Night to Forget", it is anything but. Some of her most powerful lyrics are on this album, and through and through it is a terrific assortment of music. Any Cyndi fan will not regret buying this album, from the simple sounds of "Kindred Spirit" to the soft rock theme of "Insecurious", you will be wholeheartedly satisfied with each and every song from start to finish.

After 20+ years of owning this only on cassette and it going out of print, I *FINALLY* obtained it on CD, and must say this is La Lauper's most underrated album. While not as successful as prior albums "She's So Unusual" and "True Colors", her third album bridged the gap between her fluffy pop stuff and attempts at being taken seriously as an artist (see "Hat Full of Stars" and "Sisters Of Avalon"). "Heading West" and "I Don't Want To Be Your Friend" wouldn't sound out of place on radio today, while "I Drove All Night" is classic Cyndi with a hook and chorus that sticks in your brain hours after the track has ended. While other albums had more hits, this album is by far her best. Each song flows into the next, and the songs are excellent. Best tracks are Primitive and Heading West, but the album is chalk full of great tunes that many people may have never heard of.

From what I understand, this album is not one of Cyndi's favorites due to all the record company politics that it was caught up in at the time of its release. What she should sing, who she should work with, etc. Regardless, it's one of her strongest efforts. It's a shame it's so often ignored in her live performances (with the exception of 'I Drove All Night'). This album contains some stellar vocal performances such as "Insecurious', 'Unconditional Love', 'I Don't Want to Be Your Friend', 'Primative', etc. One of the standouts by far is 'My First Night Without You'. Stunning. It's a shame this album is so often overlooked by the general public (though it seems to be a fan fave). Discover this ignored gem for yourself.
